PURPOSE:To cut the outer surface of a workpiece in reference to the center holes without using any chuck by a method wherein the workpiece having center holes at its both ends is fixed to a lathe by utilizing those center holes. CONSTITUTION:A center member is fitted to a center hole at one end of the workpiece supported by the center having the center hole at the other end fixed to the tail stock of a lathe, and the center fixed to the tail stock is moved forward together with the workpiece. The axial core of the workpiece is made to coincide with the axial core of a main shaft of the lathe by both centers and an ultra-hard insert 21 of each of the claws 20 is pushed against the end surface of the workpiece. Even if the finishing of the end surface of the workpiece is not completed, all the claws 20 are forced into the workpiece with a uniform pressure without being raised up from the end surfaces under a sliding contact between the slant surfaces at both ends of the supporting block 15 and the tapered end 14 at the rear end of the rotary body 7 having each of the claws 20. |
