When a metallic foreign body (39) is detected in a crop flow (38) conveyed to a cutting box (18) of a harvester (10), the crop feed is immediately interrupted before the foreign body (39) reaches the cutting box (18). Moreover, an alarm is triggered. When the operator reverses the conveying device for the crop (38) and restarts it in order to eject the crop (38) from the harvester (10) and bring it away from the cutting box (18), the rearwardly directed crop flow (38) is examined once more by the metal detector (24) for the presence of a metallic foreign body (39), in order to check whether the original alarm was correct or false. If the alarm is triggered a second time, then the operator knows that a metallic foreign body (39) is, in fact, present and has to be removed. If the second alarm is absent, then the harvester (10) can be switched to the forward direction again without danger and the first alarm ignored. <IMAGE> |
