The mechanism uses pairs of star wheels with teeth shaped to form circular openings which advance the shells (9) as they rotate. The shells travel between vertical guiding surfaces (78,80) then are advanced horizontally at the top, assisted by swinging sensing arms (81-84), towards the weapon. At the transfer position from the top star wheel (70) is a chain wheel (64) forming part of the drive, controlling a cam plate (66) with a rounded tip one end and a flat tip (67) at the other end, in the path of the incoming shells, acting as a direction controller. At each end of the cam are sloping surfaces (68,69) those one end facing the upper and lower sensing arms (84,84'), and the rounded tip at the other end incorporating a peg (65) forming an axis of tilt. The flat tip is smaller than the diameter of the shells and the cam controls entry into the breech of the weapon. |
