The preparation of chlorine dioxide is increasingly being carried out from sodium chlorate and hydrochloric acid using a counter-current scavenging gas in a reactor comprising a plurality of inserts arranged one on top of the other, provided with openings and preventing the remixing of gas and liquid. In order to inhibit mixing of the entire reaction solution and generate a higher efficiency of the reaction between the two starting components, the inserts are designed as profiled baffle plates (2) arranged in horizontal planes whose elevations and depressions comprise through openings (3, 4). In this manner, any desired number of reaction spaces can be formed. Advantageously, the inserts comprise sheets of zigzag or corrugated profile. The baffle plates can be alternatingly twisted by 90 DEG C relative to one another with respect to the apex lines and furthermore be arranged at different spacings from one another.
