PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having magnetic powder aligned in one direction, high rectangularity ratio, and superior electromagnetic conversion characteristics, by adding acicular oxide or hyroxide grains as an abrasive, and the acicular magnetic powder to a magnetic coating material to form a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating material contains acicular FeOOH, MnOOH, CrOOH, or a combination of them as an abrasive, and acicular magnetic powder, a binder, as well as other additives. A nonmagnetic support is coated with this coating material, and a magnetic field is applied to the coated film till drying is finished. One direction alignment of the acicular magnetic grains are not hindered by using the acicular abrasive, thus obtaining a magnetic recording material extremely excllent in rectangularity ratio, smooth on the surface, and superior in electromagnetic conversion characteristics. |
