The muffle furnace (1) is provided with a trough (5) which can be tilted downwards about a horizontal tilt axis (A5), while its charging sluice (2) has a roller conveyor (6) which can be tilted upwards about a horizontal tilt axis (A6) and is used for conveying disposable containers (7) filled with hospital waste. The tilting trough (5) consists of a frame-like tubular wall through which water or steam flows through as cooling medium in the forced circulation, and, arranged above this, of a receiving basin (18) for the disposable containers (7). This receiving basin (18) is delimited by a heat-resistant protective covering (10) which consists of cast steel plates and which is spaced apart from the tubular wall by a fireproof refractory layer covering the latter. The outer sluice gate (3) of the charging sluice (2) is arranged preferably at right angles to its inner sluice gate (4). The tilt axis (A5) of the tilting trough (5) in this case lies in the region of the inner sluice gate (3) and extends parallel to the plane of the gate, while the roller conveyor (6) extends parallel to the tilt axis (A5) of the tilting trough (5) and its own tilt axis (A6) is parallel to the tilt axis (A5) of the tilting trough (5).
