PURPOSE:To widen an angle of a visual field, and to improve contrast ratio, by orienting electrodes, liquid crystals, and their molecules in parallel, and specifying relationship between anisotropy of the refractive index of said molecules and thickness of the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of base plates arranged at a prescribed distance, many electrodes arranged in rows on the opposite surfaces of both plates, respectively, and a liquid crystal layer sealed in between both opposite electrodes, and the electrodes are provided with means for orienting liquid crystal molecules in parallel. In this device, the anisotropy n of refractive index of these molecules and the layer (d)(mum) of the liquid crystal layer are controlled so as to satisfy the equation and inequality shown on the right side. When the thickness (d) becomes less than about 3mum, the display characteristics intrinsic as the TN display element cannot be obtained. When the thickness (d) is 4-5(mum), it becomes difficult to uniformize the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the range of the display area, in the case of using a display element large in the display area, therefore, it is desirable to control the thickness (d) to 6(mum)<=d. |
