Improved polymer barrier for protective garments for personal protection against hazardous chemicals, such as epoxy products, organic solvents and pesticides, and a rational method for selection of polymer membranes with optimal permeation resistance to hazardous chemicals. A protective garment which contains a membrane of a vinyl alcohol and ethylene copolymer is an especially preferable barrier to epoxy products and solvents. Said copolymer was chosen with the optimization method of the invention, the three-dimensional solubility parameter concept. <IMAGE>
