In axial face seals with pairs of rings, in which one ring revolves with the shaft and slides with one front face against the front face of another, non-revolving ring, the revolving slip ring of a pair of rings is made axially displaceable by means of a piston which does not revolve with it and can be displaced axially under the action of a gaseous or liquid pressure medium. Compared with an older proposal, in which the non-revolving supporting ring itself was designed as a piston of this kind, this makes possible the use of inexpensive, commercially available, standard axial face seal elements at least in the region of the stationary supporting ring. <IMAGE>
