A method of combustion includes maintaining a flow of gas into, through and upwardly from a particulate bed (11), and admitting a fuel to the bed and/or to the gas flow. Such flow comprises a primary flow to a limited zone (32) of the bed (11), of sufficient velocity to entrain bed particles and carry them upwardly (34) from the bed, and a secondary flow to fluidize the bed (11), and so promote particle replenishment of the entrainment zone (32). The corresponding apparatus has a combustion chamber (13) to retain the bed (11), fuel admission means (20) and respective means (16, 18) to provide the primary and secondary gas flows. |
