<p>A ribbon cassette including an enclosure (50), an endless ribbon (84) contained in said enclosure (50), and driving means (80, 82) for moving the ribbon (84) into and out of the enclosure (50) for use in printing operations. The enclosure contains a ribbon re-inking mechanism including a porous ink supply roll (100) rotatably supported at a fixed location, and an ink transfer roll (110) pivotally mounted for rotational contact with the ink supply roll (100) for transferring ink therefrom to the ribbon, the ribbon (84) providing the force necessary to urge the ink transfer roll (110) in contact with the ink supply roll (100). The re-inking mechanism is self-regulating, since an increased tension in said ribbon (84) indicating depletion of ink therein causes increased pressure on said ink supply roll (100) to increase transfer of ink to the ribbon (84), and a decreased tension in said ribbon (84) indicating a saturated ink condition in said ribbon (84) causes decreased pressure on said ink supply roll (100) to decrease transfer of ink to the ribbon (84).</p> |
