The invention relates to a device for the output of page-like or sheet-like material, such as banknotes, a banknote delivery unit delivering a banknote stored in a banknote storage unit, and a banknote sensing section ascertaining whether the delivered banknote is deliverable (normal) or has been torn, folded or otherwise damaged (abnormal). In this process, a normal banknote is fed to a first holding unit and/or a box, while an abnormal banknote is guided into a second holding unit. When a preset number or a preset sum of banknotes has been stacked in the first holding unit, the bundle of notes comprising normal banknotes is fed to an outlet. If, however, malfunctions occur in connected devices or in connected transmission channels, the normal banknotes are transferred from the first holding unit into a return unit, before or after a preset number of normal banknotes has been stacked. The abnormal banknotes temporarily stored in the second holding unit can be transferred to the return unit after the normal banknotes stored in it have been removed. In this way, the output of banknotes is made substantially easier.
