The method relates to a method and a device for protecting mesh-operated electrical networks with selective disconnection of faulty lines. The current and voltage values of the lines to be monitored are detected cyclically by a measured value comparator in a predetermined time frame and are compared with predetermined reference values. In the event of a defect, the sequence of the line values to be evaluated by a computer system is controlled as a function of the instantaneous current and voltage values. The device for carrying out the method has a measured value comparator, a controller for predetermining a time clock, a switching mechanism for connecting the measured values to a computer mechanism in the event of a defect, and a trigger mechanism which causes the disconnection of the faulty line.
