In these drives the reciprocating movement of the free pistons of the diesel engine (1) is converted by the hydraulic oil or water delivered by the hydraulic pump (3) into rotary motion using a hydraulic motor (20) or a free jet turbine. Of simple construction without crank drive and cylinder head, and with complete counterbalancing in each cylinder, quiet running and low friction and cooling losses, these drives have the advantages, compared to the known four-stroke diesel engines, that the weight per unit power and the specific fuel consumption are lower because the hydraulic motor and the free jet turbine are lighter and have a greater efficiency than the crank drive at high delivery pressures and high speeds. In the case of automatic control of the injection quantity by the delivery pressure of the hydraulic pump, the speed in the case of the hydraulic motor is controlled by switching of the diesel engine and briefly by reducing the delivery quantity by means of a throttle valve, and in the case of the free jet turbine by adjusting of the nozzle needles and by switching of the diesel engine. The proposed drives are suitable for vehicles, ships, conveying equipment, pumps, compressors and generators.
