The object of the invention is to provide a hardness tester, with which it is possible, by means of a single adjustment of the sample at the start of the measurement procedure, subsequently to carry out any number of individual measurements without using the microscope. To achieve this object provision is made for the loading unit (3) to be coupled with a signal transmitter (7) or for a further loading unit (6) provided with a signal transmitter to be arranged pivotably on the stand (2), and for the signal transmitter (7) to be provided with a novel direct display instrument (8). <IMAGE>
