<p>The burner has a combustion chamber including a metal casing which at least partially surrounds a refractory lining having an inlet opening and an outlet opening, the latter opening being formed in an inclined front surface of the lining and defining upper and lower front faces. The combustion chamber has a pair of parallel surface, a first intermediate surface positioned between and inclined relative to one of the parallel surfaces and to the upper front face, and a second intermediate surface positioned between and inclined relative to the other parallel surface and the lower front face. The metal casing encloses the pair of parallel surfaces and the intermediate surface but leaves the inclined front surface exposed. A protective device is attached to at least one of the intermediate surfaces which overlaps the metal casing enclosing the surface and partially covers the inclined front surface. The burner is used in the flame attenuation of glass filaments. The protective device prevents contact of the inclined front surface of the lining with improperly attenuated filaments so that the burner has a longer surface life, reduced downtime for maintenance and reduced efficiency degradation.</p> |
