The 'intelligent' monitoring system uses detection of the opening of individual boxes to determine whether an abnormal number are open or whether the frequency of opening is higher than normal. If after a time delay the box usage has not returned to normal an alarm in initiated. A microcomputer (1) is used to cyclically interrogate the circuit (4) associated with each lock, and to compute the numbers open and the frequency of opening. This data is compared by the computer with previous data on the normal usage for the bank, and if beyond prescribed limits the microcomputer initiates and executes the time delay, before activating an alarm and initiating any other security measures, such as locking doors.
