PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for a water gas shift reaction in which a cost does not become high, a methanation reaction hardly progresses even at high temperature and deterioration is hardly carried out even if oxidation and reduction are repeated. SOLUTION: The catalyst for the water gas shift reaction is constituted by a porous carrier; a catalyst component carried on the porous carrier and containing platinum; and a co-catalyst component carried on the porous carrier and comprising at least one selected from copper, silver, zinc, cadmium and mercury. Since the co-catalyst component contains an element in which the H<SB>2</SB>molecule is not adsorbed and stabilized, the methanation reaction, i.e., the side reaction in the water gas shift reaction is suppressed and an amount of hydrogen obtained is much.
