PURPOSE:To prevent a misjudgement of detection, by checking the output signal level of a photodetecting part before starting a counting action to check a closed state of a protecting cover as well as the quality of the photodetecting part and then discontinuting the counting action if some fault is detected. CONSTITUTION:A note bundle 1 is put on a holder 2, and a start button 3 is pushed. Then a protecting cover 4 is closed, and a sucking hole is closed with the note touching a sucking head 8. Thus the inside atmospheric pressure drops to turn on a vacuum switch. An output fault discriminating part discriminates a fault of the output signal level of a center transmission light detecting part between the upper and lower edge position detecting parts on the basis of the output of an initial level comparing part. If no fault is detected with the cover 4, the center transmission light detecting part, photodetecting groups 15 and 18, and amplifiers of the groups 15 and 18 respectively, a counter motor is driven to start counting the number of notes. This can prevent the misjudgement for both the paper sheet width and the double feed. |
