PURPOSE:To perform the thermal impression, by using a smectic liquid crystal containing a pleochromic coloring matter and a mosaic structure and flowing a current to a patterned electrode of the smectic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A belt-shaped electrode impressed with a current pulse generates Joule heat, and the temperature rises up for a liquid crystal material 9 put on the belt-shaped electrode. Thus the material 9 has temporarily an isotropic liquid phase. The generation of the Joule heat ceases when the current pulse shifts to an adjacent belt-shaped electrode, and the corresponding part of the material 9 is cooled. Then the voltage corresponding to a picture is impressed between a belt- shaped electrode 5 orthogonal to a belt-shaped electrode 3 and its counter full- surface electrode 6. Thus it is possible to display a picture containing transparent picture elements and purple picture elements to a liquid crystal cell by generating two cooling state by the existence and obsence of the voltage impression in the material 9 at an intersection of the electrodes 3 and 5. |
