Reagent comprises at least one organic acid (I) subject to radiolytic decomposition, plus enough formic acid (II) to prolong the effect of (I) as a decontaminant. (II) also produces some oxalic acid when exposed to ionishing radiation. (I) is esp. EDTA or a mixt. of EDTA, citric acid and oxalic acid at wt. ratio 1:0.6-1.2:0.1-1.2, plus 0.6-3 pts. (II) is esp. an equal amt. of all 4 components. The reagent is formulated as a soln. in (heavy) water contg. (wt %) 0.03-0.05 % EDTA; 0.02-0.04 % citric acid; 0.01-4% oxalic acid and 0.03-0.15% (II). Ir can also include boron (to control the neutron flux).
