Gas containing from around 100 ppm to around 30 per cent by volume of sulphur dioxide, in particular flue gas, is desulphurised by being brought into contact at 15-80 degrees centigrade with an aqueous solution of potassium citrate, from 0.1 molar to saturated and having a pH value of 3-9, following which the separated solution is heated to drive off the sulphur dioxide therefrom. Hereby, a higher absorption ability for sulphur dioxide is achieved from the absorption solution, and a much faster increase of the vapour pressure of sulphur dioxide in the solution with the temperature than obtained with the corresponding sodium citrate solutions, which tends to decrease costs for chemicals, labour and equipment relative to the known methods.
