The surgical clip applicator has an elongate body (1) in which is mounted a mechanism (6) for drawing a length of wire from which the staples are to be cut into the operative zone (2) of the body. A mechanism (8) for forming the staples into a U-shape is also housed in the body. The staple shaping mechanism includes a frame which reciprocates within the body and has a U-shaped zone within which a plunger (10) slides. One of the lateral faces of the frame has a blade fixed to it to cut a length of wire at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the frame. An abutment is positioned in the operative zone of the body perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body and in the plane of movement of the frame.
