A periodically operating air drier for compressed-air systems chargeable by a compressor and having a compressed-air reservoir (27) has an inlet connection (2) and an outlet connection (25) for air and an outlet valve (7, 8) controlled via a pressure regulator (12) between a cut-in and a cut-out pressure and having a switching piston (9). A container (20) filled with regenerable desiccant (19) and a filter (18) are provided in the interior (17) of the housing (1), the desiccant (19) being regenerated in the entire no-load phase by return flow of dried air in a return line (33) from the compressed-air reservoir (27). In order, on the one hand, to extend the regeneration phase over the entire no-load phase and, on the other hand, to allow the filter (18) and/or the desiccant (19) to be replaced without danger when the vehicle is stopped, without venting the compressed-air reservoir (27) beforehand, the return line (33) is routed via the inlet valve (13, 15) of the pressure regulator (12). <IMAGE>
