The invention relates to a transport system for local public passenger transport with vehicles of different sizes which can be used on rails and with a corresponding track network. In order to match the vehicle size, appropriately to requirements, to the passenger volume which changes according to the time of day, a plurality of train-formation stations are distributed along the lines in the track network and connected, in each case independently, to the vehicle depots via separate train-formation tracks which are free of junctions along their course. The vehicles and also the train-formation tracks are constructed in such a way that the vehicles can be directed unmanned from the depots into the train-formation stations or vice versa. By virtue of the arrangement of the train-formation stations near to the tracks, preferably on each transport line, it is possible to change the vehicles without difficulty and quickly during scheduled services and thus to easily match the vehicle size to the changing passenger volume appropriately for requirements.
