To reliably disinfect water (drinking water, circulating water, for example cooling water, etc.) using sodium hypochlorite electrolytically prepared from a highly dilute sodium chloride solution, an arrangement can be used which automatically ensures the conversion of NaCl to NaOCl in any desired container without laborious pretreatment and installation and is always immediately available. The arrangement can be supplied with electricity both from the mains and also from batteries. A measuring device for determination of the hypochlorite concentration with subsequent control of the hypochlorite production is possible.
