<p>A compound of the formula <IMAGE> and salts thereof, in which R is an acyl group, R"C=O, in which R" is a straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon chain containing 1-10 carbon atoms, is an intermediate for preparing 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine and salts thereof. the compound IX is prepared by a) a compound of the general formula VIII <IMAGE> in which R is defined as above and R' is a protecting group such as benzyl, which is optionally substituted by 1 or 2 alkoxy groups, or lower alkyl groups, where alkyl is defined as a straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon chain containing 1-4 carbon atoms, being dearalkylated, or by b) a compound of the general formula VIII being reacted with a Lewis acid, or by c) a compound of the general formula VIII being reacted with an acetic acid, or by d) a compound of the general formula IX being converted into its salt, or by e) the salt being converted into the corresponding free compound of the general formula IX. The compound 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, are useful as antiviral agents.</p> |
