In a mechanical shovel with a boom mounted on the top frame and pivotable in a vertical plane, a shovel arm pivotably mounted on the free end of the boom, and a shovel which is pivotably connected to the shovel arm and can be actuated by means of a hydraulic shovel cylinder and has a first bearing pin to pivotably mount it on the shovel arm and a second bearing pin to connect it in an articulated manner to one end of a coupler, the other end of which is connected in an articulated manner on the one hand to the shovel cylinder attached to the shovel arm and on the other hand to a guide link which is pivotably mounted on the front end of the shovel arm but behind the first bearing pin, and also with a cylinder for retracting and extending the boom, a cylinder for retracting and extending the shovel arm, and a control cylinder, the object of re-setting the different rotary angles of the shovel, for digging in the horizontal or on a slope, by means of a suitable guide link system between shovel cylinder and shovel, in such a way that both digging in the horizontal and on a slope are as far as possible carried out with an identical stroke of the shovel cylinder, is achieved in that the length of the guide link is at least approximately twice as large as the distance between the bearing pins, that the length of the coupler is at least approximately the same as the distance between the bearing pins, and that the articulation point of the guide link on the shovel arm, relative to the arm system line defined by the articulation point of the shovel on the shovel arm and by the articulation point of the shovel arm on the boom, is offset in the direction of the boom and downwards to an extent which corresponds at least approximately to half the distance between the two bearing pins.
