Process for the preparation of terpineol by direct hydration of alpha-and/or beta-pinene and/or of a raw material containing at least one of these compounds to give terpineol using aqueous mineral acid in the presence of an emulsifier, characterized in that the hydration of the starting product is carried out using 20 to 60 % strength, by weight, aqueous phosphoric acid, at least 0.5 parts by volume of phosphoric acid being used per 1 part by volume of starting product, the process is carried out in the presence of 0.05 to 0.5 %, by weight, (based on the weight of the phosphoric acid) of a non-ionogenic or cationic emulsifier, the organic and the aqueous phases are mixed well and temperatures are maintained in the range from 40 to 80 degrees C. |
