The tobacco purifying process serves for treating tobacco products intended for human consumption, in order to reduce their content of nicotine, condensates such as hydrocarbons, and other harmful materials injurious to the organism. For this purpose, a charge of the tobacco product is placed into a water bath and treated with water therein, the time of the water treatment being all the longer, the lower the bath temperature. After the water treatment has been carried out, the tobacco charge is freed of the water bath loaded with dissolved or suspended harmful substances, and the excess water together with further harmful substances is removed from the tobacco charge by applying pressure. Finally, the pre-drained tobacco charge is subjected to a drying process. For this purpose, the tobacco charge can be spread out on a drying surface or introduced into a drying vessel and thus subjected to air drying.
