The invention relates to a method for long-term protection of cables and pipes laid underground against violent damage by being dug up or the like. The invention consists in that an electric signal identification is assigned to the electrically conductive cable or pipe by a signal generator pressing on the cable or pipe via a coupling device electrical signals whose field strengths above the ground can be detected by a receiver. The significant identification of a cable can be performed both via a specific frequency and via a specific pulse-code modulation. The display device at the receiver can be designed such that information is input for one identification in each case, independently of whether it is a frequency or PCM identification.
