The invention relates to the measurement of the refractive index and/or of a spatially dependent refractive index profile, in particular of small bodies, by using the Cerenkov effect. This makes it possible, for example, to measure the refractive index profile of an optical glass fibre with the aid of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thus to obtain a good spatial resolution.
