A retaining structure of piles and ground nails driven in from the foundation pit leads to a bond action between the piles and the earth of the foundation pit, which bond action is assisted by a facultatively provided reinforcement in the wall of the retaining structure. The piles of the retaining structure absorb vertical loads, while horizontal shear loads are absorbed via the bond formed. In a modified embodiment, subsequent injections are provided which bring about a connection between the piles and/or ground nails. <IMAGE>
