The tape (1) is driven at high speed from the supply spool (2), across the dual head assembly (22) and the unclamped speed control roller assembly (23), and onto the take-up spool (5). Each spool is driven by a separate motor (10,11). If the first (15) of the heads detects a change in level, closely followed by another, detection circuits (16,18) operate a switching circuit (14) to slow down the spool motors, clamp the speed control roller (9) onto the tape and force the audio pick-up head into contact with the tape. The audio signal is then amplified and fed to a loudspeaker (13). If the signal disappears for more than a short time, the machine again moves into its fast mode.
