The present invention relates to a cell discovery method for a mobile terminal in a cellular communication system. The communication system comprises mobile terminals and a radio access network part. In the method a connection is set up (401-403) between the mobile terminal and the radio access network, the mobile terminal then receives (404) a control message for launching a cell discovery. Next the mobile terminal performs cell discovery in the communication system based on the information in the control message and then sends (405) identities of at least some of the detected cells to the radio access network.
