A catalyst support compsn. contains Cl, Br and Mg, the molar ratio of Br or Cl being 1:99-50:50, and is obtd. by reacting an organo-Mg cpd. with a mixt. of chlorinated and brominated Al cpds. Examples of the reactants specified in the claims are Et2Mg, Ph2Mg, dibenzyl-Mg, dicyclohexyl-Mg, Mg Al pentaethyl, Mg di-Al octaethyl and Mg di-Al diphenyl hexaethyl; and AlCl3, EtAlCl2, Et2AlCl, Ph2AlCl, (PhCH2)2AlCl, ethyl Al sesquichloride and the corresponding bromies. The molar ratio of Mg to combined Cl and Br may be 1:1.6-2.0, pref. 1:1.8-2.0. The Br/Cl molar ratio is pref. 2.5:97.5-20:80, esp. 2.5-97.5-15:85. The cpds. may be combined in an inert diluent to form a slurry, which is suitably maintained at -20 to 180, pref. 25-110 deg.C. for 1 min. - 24 hrs., pref. 1-8 hrs. When used in the polymerisation of olefins, high polymer yields and a high degree of polymer isotacticity are obtd.
|
