Europium-doped luminescent fluoride halides of alkaline earth metals are made with doping by terbium or incorporation of magnesium fluoride into the lattice, to give prods. of formula (Me1-c Mgc)F2. Me'X2:aEu2+,bTb3+ in which Me and Me' are Ba, Sr or Ca, X is Cl or Br, and a, b and c satisfy one of the following relationships (A) and (B). The luminescent materials have more efficient emission properties than known europium doped alkaline earth fluoride halide phosphors upon excitation by X-rays, UV or cathode rays, and are useful in the prodn. of fluorescent screens and lamps and (esp.) in the prodn. of X-ray image converters, esp. X-ray intensification screens.
