PURPOSE:To contrive appropriate performing to lower a combustion temperature without giving any negative effect to the fuel consumption and the output of the titled device by a method wherein a relief valve is provided to flow a part of the feeding air away into an intake system or an exhaust system by opening said valve, when the cylinder internal pressure exceeds the designated value during the compression stroke. CONSTITUTION:A relief device 5 is provided on a cylinder head 2. Said relief device 5 is composed of a relief valve 6 and its control device 7. Said relief valve 6 is opened, when the internal pressure of a cylinder 1 which is increased with the progress of compression stroke by a piston 3 exceeds the designated value, then a part of the feeding air is flowed away. Also said relief valve 6 is controlled by said control device 7 to be closed during the explosion stroke after the relief pressure is increased preceding the timing of the ignition or fuel injection. For said purpose, said relief valve 6 is provided with an opening 8 facing to a combustion chamber 4, and a valve body 10 can be fitted on a valve seat 9 which is closely arranged with said opening 8.
