A secondary battery, and a method for preparing a negative electrode active material used in the secondary battery are provided to increase energy density and to improve electrical conductivity. A negative electrode active material of a secondary battery comprises a carbon nanofiber whose edge is exposed in an external wall. Preferably the negative electrode active material has pores having a diameter larger than the diameter of an electrolyte. The negative electrode active material is prepared by preparing a carbon nanofiber; purifying the carbon nanofiber; heat treating the purified carbon nanofiber to remove the amorphous carbon formed on the external wall and exposing the edge; and optionally activating the heat treated carbon nanofiber by using potassium hydroxide. |
