PURPOSE:To obtain a vitreous carbon material having high density and excellent strength, hardness, etc., by extracting fine powder of coke manufactured at low temperature with an organic solvent to remove the soluble components, and compression molding and baking the powder as it is. CONSTITUTION:Raw coke manufactured at <=600 deg.C is finely pulverized to a volume-average particle diameter of <=25mum, subjected to the particle size adjustment, and treated with an organic solvent such as quinoline under heating to remove the components soluble in the solvent. The obtained fine coke powder is compression molded as it is without using a binder, and baked at a specific temperature in e.g. an inert atmosphere. A vitreous carbon material having high density and excellent mechanical strength, hardness, electrical resistance, etc. can be obtained by this process. The carbon material can be used in the fields of various jigs, containers for metallic industry, special electrodes, electrical heating elements, etc. |
