In a dental handpiece (1) having mechanical drive elements (2) located in its interior and extending essentially across the length of the handpiece for moving a tool (3) provided at one end of the handpiece, and furthermore having an optical waveguide (4) directed towards the region of the tool with its end (5) located on the tool end of the handpiece and whose end (6) which is remote from the tool faces a light source (7), the handpiece (1) being connected on its end remote from the tool to a supply part (9) having a connecting supply hose (8), impairment on use of the handpiece due to the arrangement of the optical waveguide is to be avoided, for which reason the handpiece (1) is connected to the supply part (9) so as to be rotatable about a common axis (A) and the optical waveguide (4) is arranged so as to extend inside the handpiece (1) next to the drive elements (2) and essentially in the common axis of rotation (A) and to emerge from the end of the handpiece (1) remote from the tool, and furthermore the light source (7) is arranged on the tool end of the supply part (9) essentially in the common axis of rotation (A). <IMAGE>
