In a medical handpiece (1) having an internal driving shaft (2) which has a catch (4) fixed against rotation at its free end remote from the tool, which catch can be engaged with a catch (7) fixed against rotation on the free tool end of a drive shaft (6) rotatably mounted in a drive part (5), at least one of the catches (4, 7) being mounted so as to be axially movable counter to the force of a spring (8) from the free end of its shaft (2 and 6, respectively), and furthermore the connection, fixed against rotation, between the axially movable catch and its shaft comprising axial guide elements (9, 10) located on said catch and its shaft and engaging with each other, the arrangement of the axial guide elements should cause no more than little expense and should not cause any noticeable material weakening, for which reason the axial guide elements (10) of the shaft (2 and 6, respectively) of the axially movable catch (4 and 7, respectively) are provided only on the outer wall of the shaft. <IMAGE>
