PURPOSE:To make it possible to availably eliminate noscious gas in a mixed exhaust gas consisting of H, CO, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide, by using a catalyst formed from a mixture comprising a substance with oxygen ion conductivity and a platinum group metal or the Group Ib metal of the Periodic Table. CONSTITUTION:This catalyst is constituted from a mixture consisting of a substance having high oxygen ion conductivity such as ZrO2, CeO2, ThO2 or Bi2O3 and a platinum group metal or the Group Ib metal of the Periodic Table (e.g., Cu, Ag, Au). For example, an oxygen ion conductor ZeO2.Y2O3 (mole ratio 90:10) and a Pd metal are mixed in such a ratio that the latter occupies 10<-5>mol% of the formed mixture which is in turn molded into a pellet. By using this catalyst, a noxious gas can be availably eliminated with respect to an exhaust gas containing a non-equivalent mixture of a reducible gas such as CO, by hydrocarbon or hydrogen and an oxidizable gas such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide.
|
