In a single-acting pneumatic cylinder, the drawing-in of water into the unpressurized chamber (15) during use in the submerged state is avoided by a quick-action vent valve (9, 11) being arranged in such a way that the compressed air flows into one chamber (13) during the working stroke of the piston (2), and the exhaust air passes from this chamber (13) into the other chamber (15) during the return stroke of the piston (2), and by a non-return valve (17, 18) which opens to the outside being attached to the other chamber (15). The quick-action vent valve can in particular have a hat-like closure body (11) and can be fitted in an axially parallel longitudinal bore (8) of the cylinder housing (1). The outlet valve (17, 18) is preferably designed as an annular diaphragm valve. <IMAGE>
