Compounds having the formula: wherein R1_ is hydroxy, halogen, nitro, amino, cycloalkyl having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, aryl or aryloxy which may be substituted with halogen, R<2> is hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl, R<3> is carboxy or protected carboxy, Ya is sulfur, oxygen or methylene, and A is lower alkylene, provided that when R<2> is hydrogen and Ya is sulfur or oxygen, R1_a is not halogen; and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are useful in the treatment of diabetic complications. The compounds of the invention can be prepared by a number of chemical techniques.
