PURPOSE:To increase the life and enhance the characteristic of a sealed storage battery by the combination of a sulfonated separator layer and a non-sulfonated separator layer which contains a surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A non-woven polypropylene fabric is sulfonated by being immersed in commercially available concentrated sulfuric acid of 98% concentration for 20min. Next, the non-woven fabric is superposed on a non-woven polypropylene fabric containing a commercially available surfactant, and these two non-woven fabrics are unified by spot fusion. Thus obtained separator, a positive sintered nickel electrode and a negative pasted cadmium electrode are rolled into a spiral shape, and the spiral member is inserted into a battery case. After that, a given amount of caustic-potash electrolyte is poured in the battery case, and the battery is sealed so as to constitute a sealed battery of the single-2 type. Here, the sulfonated layer of the separator is positioned on the side of the positive electrode, while the layer containing the surfactant is positioned on the side of the negative electrode. As a result, in the negative electrode which touches the non-sulfonated separator layer, a decreased proportion of the electrode surface is wetted by the electrolyte, and an increased amount of gas is absorbed during charging. Consequently, the high-rate charging characteristic immediately after the assembly of the battery is enhanced. |
