The invention relates to an apparatus for individually separating a pile of book blocks for use in a block feeder having a pile advancement which is controlled by the book block and by which the book blocks are moved against a stop. The aim of the invention is to provide an apparatus for individually separating a pile of book blocks for high cycle times irrespective of the book block format while avoiding harmful influences by the individually separating means on the book block. The object of the invention is to achieve a sudden, precisely defined individual separation of a pile of book blocks by means which operate without applying any pressure to the book block. This object is achieved according to the invention by the book block to be individually separated being raised above the supporting edge of a stop by a block lifter movably arranged on more than one level and being stripped off by a pivotable block pusher into the block feeding duct of a slip-fold making machine. With the block feeder according to the invention, exact individual separating is achieved with maximum output while treating the book blocks extremely gently.
