In each stage bagasse is stirred into suspension in a washing juice, the suspension deaerated and then pumped in turbulent flow through pipework leading to a separator, e.g. a screen, where enriched juice is sepd. from the bagasse; this whole process is repeated several times, the washing juice being circulated counter-current to the bagasse so that as bagasse progressively loses its sugar it is put into suspension in the next stage with correspondingly weaker washing juice each time. Pref. part of the juice sepd. from bagasse in one stage is recycled in the suspension of the same stage. The multi-stage, counter-current extraction improves mass transfer and gives a higher yield of product. Deaeration suppresses capillary retention of juice in the bagasse. |
