An analog signal to be counted is converted into a pulse sequence fein by a converter (10). Adjustable frequency step-down means (14) contain several rate multipliers (22, 24, 26) which are connected in cascade and are controlled by coding switches (34, 36, 38). This results in an output frequency faus = Nfein, in which the factor N can be directly set at the rate multipliers (22, 24, 26). When all coding switches (34, 36, 38) are set to zero, a zero detection logic (40) operates by means of which the input can be switched directly to the output by means of a change-over switch (42). <IMAGE>
