The exhaust gases containing combustible, gaseous and solid components are after-combusted in several successive stages, in order to avoid shoulders and excessive thermal stress of the afterburner chamber. In each stage, a respective portion of the combustible components is afterburned by corresponding control of the respectively added quantity of oxygen, and the gas is cooled by spraying water in before entry into the succeeding stages.
